DLSA West Garo Hills: The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, is pleased to announce a golden opportunity for members of the Bar Association of Meghalaya. If you are a registered member under the Bar Council of Meghalaya and a citizen of India with the requisite qualifications, this is your chance to apply for the posts of Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsel and Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel. These positions are based in the DLSA, Tura, under the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System Modified Scheme, 2022.

Number of Vacant Posts: 3
Honorarium/Remuneration: Rs. 40,000/-

Qualifications:

  • Practice in Criminal Law for at least 7 years.
  • Excellent understanding of criminal law.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in legal research.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ethical duties of defense counsel.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.
  • Experience in handling at least 20 criminal trials in Sessions Courts (may be relaxed in exceptional circumstances by Hon’ble Executive Chairman).
  • IT knowledge and proficiency in relevant work.
  • Must be a citizen of India.

Job Profile:

  • Conducting trials, appeals, remand work, bail applications, and prison visits as assigned by the Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel.
  • Filing and arguing appeals and bail applications in courts.
  • Maintaining complete case files.
  • Performing legal research in legal aided cases and guiding assistant legal aid defense counsel and law students.
  • Conducting proper client interviews for quality research work and representation at remand, trial, and appellate stages.
  • Executing any work or duties assigned by the Legal Services Authority.

Qualifications:

  • Practice in Criminal Law for 0 to 3 years.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently with others.

Job Profile:

  • Filing cases and conducting trials in magistrate trial cases.
  • Executing duties as assigned by the Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel and Legal Services Authority.
  • Remand/bail and other miscellaneous work.
  • Legal research I legal aided cases.
  • Visit to Prison and Legal aid Clinics as per directions.
  • Assisting Chief legal Aid Defence counsel and Deputy Legal Aid
  • Defence Counsel(s) in conduction of legal aid cases.
  • Assisting in developing a defence strategy after sifting through all of the evidence collected by the prosecution and after hearing the accused version of what happened during the alleged crime in question.
  • Visiting location area of alleged crime having discussions with family members etc, for effective and meaningful input of defence strategy
  • Handling queries of legal aid seekers.
  • Updating legal aid seekers about the progress of their cases.
  • Assisting in maintaining complete files of legal aided cases.
  • Handling legal queries relating to criminal matters on telephone.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation.
  • Basic word processing skills and ability to operate a computer.

  • Ability to take dictation and prepare files for court presentation.
  • Knowledge in file maintenance and processing.
  • Must be a citizen of India.

Job Profile:

  • Keeping updated records of legal aided cases.
  • Uploading updated records/progress of legal aided cases on NALSA portal and other digital platforms.
  • Maintaining complete files of legal aided cases with proper indexing.
  • Typing applications, petitions, appeals, etc.
  • Performing ministerial work related to cases.
  • Any other task assigned by the Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel or Legal Services Authority.

2. Receptionist-cum-Data Entry Operator

Honorarium/Remuneration: Rs. 15,000/-

Qualifications:

  • Graduation.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency in word and data processing.
  • Ability to operate telecommunication systems.

Job Profile:

  • Greeting clients and visitors and answering inquiries.
  • Answering and routing incoming calls.
  • Scheduling and routing legal aid seekers.
  • Maintaining the waiting area and other office spaces.
  • Scanning, photocopying, faxing, and routing mail.
  • Uploading initial information of legal aided cases on NALSA portal and updating the information from time to time.
  • Any other work/duty assigned by the Legal Services Authority.

3. Office Peon

Number of Vacant Posts: 3
Honorarium/Remuneration: Rs. 10,000/-

Qualifications:

  • Matriculate passed or equivalent from any recognized institution.

Job Profile:

  • General work of MTS, Munshi, or Peon.
  • Cleaning the office before commencement of office hours.
  • Ensuring that all places in the office are kept clean.
  • Serving water, beverages to visitors.
  • Carrying dak and performing miscellaneous work.
  • Any other work assigned by the Legal Services Authority.
