He said that more than 2,000 personnel were recruited recently. However, even after that, around 1,000 posts are still vacant. So, the department is still short of manpower.
According to the rules of the Bureau of Police Research and Development, police strength should match the population size. Meghalaya needs more officers to meet that standard. Right now, the number is not enough.

The Deputy Chief Minister also shared clear numbers about different police units. This helps us understand the situation better.

So, there is a shortage of more than 400 personnel in police stations alone.
Police Outposts
- Required staff: 503

Overall Staff Gap in Meghalaya Police
Let us look at the overall numbers in a simple table.
| Category | Required Strength | Current Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Total Police Force | 3,486 | 2,832 |
| Police Reserve (12 Districts) | — | 859 Deployed |
So, when we compare the sanctioned strength of 3,486 with the present strength of 2,832, we clearly see a big gap. That is why new recruitment is necessary.
In addition, 859 police personnel are working in the Police Reserve across 12 districts. Even then, the department needs more staff to handle law and order properly.
What the Government Said About Future Recruitment
The government has made it clear that recruitment will continue. The 1,000 vacant posts will soon be advertised. After that, eligible candidates can apply.
However, candidates must keep checking official updates. It is important to prepare early because police recruitment usually includes:

- Medical examination
- Document verification
So, start preparing now. Focus on fitness as well as studies.
